İt was first proposed by the International SoilSciences Union (IUSS) to determine the international soil day in 2002. Under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand and within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership, the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) supported the establishment of World Soil Day as an official day as a global awareness-raising platform. FAO unanimously approved World Soil Day at the Conference it held in June 2013 and demanded that it be formally adopted at the 68th United Nations (UN) General Assembly. In December 2013, the UN General Assembly responded positively to this request by designating December 5, 2014 as the first official World Soil Day. The United Nations also declared 2015 the International Year of the Soil, contributing to raising global awareness of the importance of soils.
World Soil Day is held on 5 December each year as a tool to draw attention to the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. The theme of World Soil Day on December 5, 2018 was celebrated with the slogan "Be a Solution to Prevent Soil Pollution" and the hashtag #Stop SoilPollution.
FAO reports that 1/3 of the world's land is degraded. We are at risk of losing more land due to soil pollution, which is a hidden danger. Soil pollution can be invisible and seem far away, but everyone and everywhere is affected. The world population is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050. Soil pollution is a worldwide problem that poisons the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. Since there is no data on a global scale, the existence of the problem is still unknown.
